Raacho Trekkers
Responsible Trekking & Ecotourism in Kinnaur and Spiti Valley
About
About Raacho Trekkers
Raacho Trekkers is a Kinnaur-based ecotourism agency offering trekking expeditions, technical climbing, wildlife photography tours, and offbeat road trips across the Western Himalayas. Based in Reckong Peo, the administrative headquarters of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh, Raacho Trekkers has spent over a decade guiding travellers through the lesser-explored valleys of Kinnaur, Spiti, Uttarkashi, and the Garhwal region. The team is composed entirely of local guides and spotters with an inherent connection to the mountainous terrain they call home, lending every expedition a depth of cultural and ecological knowledge that few outside operators can match.
Treks & Experiences
Raacho Trekkers curates bespoke itineraries that range from non-technical and semi-technical trekking to technical mountaineering and dedicated Snow Leopard photography tours in the Spiti valley. Their flagship trekking routes include:
- Spiti Snow Leopard Trail & Photography Expedition
- Lamkhaga Pass Trek (Chitkul to Harsil, Gangotri)
- Auden’s Col with Mayali Pass Trek
- Twin Pass Trek (Borasu Pass with Bali Pass)
- Kinner Kailash Parikrama Trek (Charang-La)
- Bhabha Pass with Pin Pass Trek
- Mangsu Pass Trek
- Spiti Circuit Road Trip
In June 2014, the team completed the first documented recce of the Lamkhaga Pass route from the Kinnaur side, traversing from Chitkul to Gangotri — a route only sparsely scouted before. In 2017, Raacho Trekkers became the first group to link Patangini Dhar, Auden’s Col, and Mayali Pass in a single expedition, an achievement that earned the team a feature in National Geographic Traveller magazine.
Responsible Tourism Commitment
Raacho Trekkers operates in highly ecologically fragile regions where the social, economic, and environmental impact of travel must be carefully managed. The agency deliberately runs smaller group sizes, which allows for closer attention to individual trekkers while placing far less pressure on fragile alpine ecosystems. Environmental consciousness extends to waste management as well — the team follows sustainable methods of waste disposal throughout every expedition, leaving campsites and trails as untouched as possible.
Team members regularly participate in cleaning drives and workshops organised by the Healing Himalayas Foundation, and Raacho Trekkers is an active member of the local administration-appointed Kinnaur Ecotourism Committee. Being native to the region, the team understands the fragility of the mountain ecosystem and the importance of protecting the primitive culture of mountain communities, while still revealing the Himalayas’ lesser-travelled beauty to the wider world.
Why Choose Raacho Trekkers
Comfort and hygiene are treated as non-negotiable: Raacho Trekkers was among the first operators in the region to provide foam mattresses in tents, alongside carefully sourced, hygienic food on every trip. Every itinerary is designed and led by guides native to Kinnaur and the surrounding valleys, ensuring trekkers gain authentic insight into local culture, language, and the day-to-day life of mountain communities — not just the trail itself.
The agency’s decade-plus experience organising expeditions in Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring Uttarakhand means every itinerary is built on first-hand knowledge of seasonal conditions, permit requirements, and the safest, least disruptive routes through ecologically sensitive high-altitude terrain.
Travel Tips for Kinnaur & Spiti
Several of the regions Raacho Trekkers operates in lie close to restricted border areas, so travellers heading into parts of Kinnaur and Spiti valley should check Inner Line Permit (ILP) requirements before departure. The best trekking window for most high-altitude passes in the region runs from May through September, once snow cover has receded enough to make passes negotiable, though winter expeditions for Snow Leopard photography in Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary follow their own separate season. Raacho Trekkers’ local guides handle permit logistics, route planning, and weather contingencies as part of every expedition, reducing the friction that often comes with travelling in geographically remote and ecologically sensitive terrain.
Plan Your Himalayan Journey
Whether the goal is a multi-day technical pass crossing, a Snow Leopard photography expedition in Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, or an offbeat road trip through Kinnaur and Spiti valley, Raacho Trekkers blends adventure with a genuine responsible-travel ethic.
