100% biodegradable plant-based bottles for the beverage industry
Bakwa is a Kerala-based manufacturer of biodegradable beverage bottles, founded by three friends from Thodupuzha who were troubled by the plastic waste washing up along the state’s backwaters. Rather than campaign against plastic pollution from the outside, they set out to build a working alternative: a bottle that looks, functions, and performs like conventional plastic packaging, but returns safely to the earth once it has served its purpose. Bakwa operates under TryGlobe Exim Traders and is based in Thodupuzha, Idukki district, Kerala.
Conventional single-use plastic bottles can take up to a thousand years to break down, and an estimated eight million tonnes of plastic enters the world’s oceans every year. Beverage bottles are among the most visible contributors to this waste stream, discarded after a single use and often ending up in rivers, backwaters, and landfills long after the drink inside them is gone. Bakwa’s mission is to eliminate single-use plastic waste from the beverage industry by replacing it with a plant-based, genuinely biodegradable format that beverage brands, event organisers, and retailers can adopt without changing how they fill, seal, or distribute their products.
Bakwa’s bottles are made from a PLA+PBAT composition, a bioplastic derived from renewable, plant-based feedstocks, primarily cornstarch and sugarcane, rather than petroleum. Under industrial composting conditions, the material decomposes naturally within roughly 150 to 180 days, breaking down completely without leaving behind microplastic fragments, unlike many products marketed as eco-friendly that only fragment into smaller plastic particles. The bottles, caps, and labels are designed as a compostable system, so the entire package, not just the container, is built to return to the soil.
Bakwa manufactures bottles in three standard sizes, 250ml, 500ml, and 1 litre, with bulk customisation available for brands and events that need specific volumes or branding. The bottles are BPA-free and food-grade, suitable for both hot and cold beverages, and remain structurally stable down to -18 degrees Celsius, making them workable across a wide range of storage and transport conditions. They carry a 12-month shelf life and are leak-proof with screw-cap compatibility, so they can be filled and sealed using the same processes beverage producers already use for plastic bottles. This is a deliberate design choice: switching to Bakwa’s bottles does not require a beverage brand to overhaul its bottling line.
Bakwa’s bottles have undergone CIPET (Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology) validation and hold CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) certification, giving beverage brands and bulk buyers an independent basis for verifying the biodegradability and safety claims made about the product, rather than relying on marketing language alone.
Alongside its core manufacturing business, Bakwa runs an initiative called the Free Water Project, in which local brands sponsor advertising space on bottle labels to help offset production costs, allowing the bottles to reach consumers at little to no cost. Within months of its early distribution efforts, Bakwa reported thousands of bottles reaching consumers through this route, a model that ties commercial sustainability of the biodegradable format to genuine community access, rather than treating eco-friendly packaging as a premium product reserved for a smaller market.
Bakwa’s bottles are built for beverage manufacturers, bottling units, event organisers, hospitality businesses, and retailers looking to move away from single-use plastic without compromising on shelf life, temperature tolerance, or handling convenience. Because the bottles are compatible with standard screw-cap filling lines, they are positioned as a practical substitute rather than a specialty product requiring new infrastructure. For businesses already exploring sustainable packaging options, or others operating in the wider food and beverage space looking to reduce their plastic footprint, Bakwa’s biodegradable bottle format offers a direct, drop-in replacement for conventional PET and HDPE containers.
