AlteRe Innovations
Innovative Circular Economy Solutions for Food Waste
About
About AlteRe Innovations
AlteRe Innovations is an Assam-based startup converting pre-consumer food waste into high-quality animal feed through circular economy technology. Founded by Sreyance Modi and Akshay Modi, the company addresses two interconnected challenges in Northeast India: the volume of food waste ending up in landfills, and the persistent shortage of affordable, nutritious livestock feed for farmers across the region. With academic backing from Dr. Siddhartha Singha, an Assistant Professor at IIT Guwahati, AlteRe combines scientific rigour with practical field operations.
The Problem: Food Waste and Feed Shortage
Pre-consumer food waste — surplus from bakeries, food processors, caterers, and hotels — is one of the largest consistently generated waste streams in India. When this waste reaches landfills, it produces methane and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. AlteRe intercepts this waste at source using proprietary segregation and blending technology, converting it into nutritious animal feed before it can reach disposal.
At the same time, livestock farmers across Northeast India face consistent difficulty sourcing affordable, reliable feed. AlteRe's products close this gap by creating a traceable, quality-assured supply sourced entirely from what would otherwise have been wasted food — turning an environmental liability into an agricultural resource.
Products: Bakery Meal and Savory Meal
AlteRe produces two animal feed formulations. Bakery Meal is derived from surplus bakery production waste, processed and blended to deliver consistent nutritional value for livestock. Savory Meal is formulated from savoury food waste streams, providing an alternative protein and energy source for animals.
Both products include full traceability documentation, allowing buyers to verify the waste source, processing methodology, and nutritional profile of each batch. This end-to-end transparency supports responsible procurement for farms and feed businesses that require verified supply chain standards.
Scale and Cross-State Collaboration
AlteRe currently processes approximately 30,000 kg of pre-consumer food waste every month. The startup has partnered with KPADO from Meghalaya, building a cross-state circular economy network that extends food waste recovery across Northeast India. This collaboration demonstrates how regional partnerships can amplify impact by matching waste generators in one location with agricultural demand in another.
The company tracks impact through landfill diversion volumes, carbon footprint reduction per tonne of waste processed, and cost savings to waste generators — embedding data-driven accountability into its operations within the broader eco-products and circular economy space.
Why the Circular Economy Approach Works
Every kilogram of pre-consumer food waste that AlteRe diverts from landfill prevents the release of methane — a greenhouse gas roughly 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year horizon. At 30,000 kg processed monthly, the cumulative climate benefit grows with each passing season. The company also recovers biogas as a by-product of its processing operations, generating clean energy on-site and reducing the facility's dependence on conventional fuel sources.
The circular economy model underpinning AlteRe's work is straightforward: intercept a waste stream from one industry before it reaches disposal, and convert it into a productive input for another. This is commercially more robust than asking businesses to reduce waste generation on goodwill alone — instead, AlteRe makes responsible disposal financially attractive for food businesses while simultaneously supplying affordable, quality-verified feed to farmers. The company tracks landfill diversion volumes, carbon savings per tonne, and cost reductions for waste generators, embedding measurable accountability into its supply chain within the broader eco-products and circular economy sector. AlteRe's growth also demonstrates that Northeast India's food and agricultural sector holds significant untapped potential for circular economy enterprises — operations that create genuine commercial value from what is currently treated as waste, while delivering measurable environmental benefit to the communities they operate within.
Based in Assam
AlteRe Innovations is headquartered in Assam and was recognised among six outstanding sustainability startups from Northeast India through the Prakriti Incubation Launchpad programme. For food businesses generating surplus waste and for farmers seeking consistent, quality-verified animal feed, AlteRe offers a practical and environmentally accountable circular solution that serves both ends of the value chain.
