About

About Aulive

Aulive is a Delhi-based sustainable accessories brand founded in 2017 by Wamika Shekhawat and Yashraj V. Rathor. Born from a desire to enjoy the elegance of leather without the ethical cost, Aulive became one of India’s earliest brands to build its entire identity around plant-based, cruelty-free leather alternatives. Every bag, wallet, and travel accessory in the Aulive collection is handcrafted by artisans at their workshop on the outskirts of Delhi, combining traditional Indian craftsmanship with innovative, low-impact materials sourced from nature.

Plant-Based Materials: Innovation from Nature

Aulive’s material philosophy is its most distinctive feature. The brand sources its plant-based leathers from natural agricultural by-products, ensuring that no animal is harmed and no additional environmental resources are consumed in raw material production.

  • Pineapple Leather (Pinãtex®): Introduced in 2019, Aulive’s Pinãtex®-based bags are made from fibres extracted from pineapple leaves — a by-product of the pineapple harvest that would otherwise go to waste. The raw material requires no additional land, water, or fertiliser to produce, making it one of the most resource-efficient leather alternatives available.
  • Coconut Leather: Added to the collection in 2021 through a partnership with a Kerala-based producer, coconut leather uses the by-products of coconut processing to create a durable, textured surface that closely resembles traditional leather.
  • Cork Lining: Aulive uses cork — sourced through a Delhi-based export house — as a lining and structural material. Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without felling them, making it entirely renewable and naturally biodegradable.

Handcrafted by Indian Artisans

Aulive designs are created in collaboration with freelance designers, and the products are handcrafted by artisans at the brand’s workshop near Delhi. This handmade approach ensures quality control at every stage while supporting local skilled labour — a model that values craft over mass production. Materials for the plant-based leathers are sourced from Italy and domestic partners, with a clear focus on supply chain transparency.

Why Aulive Qualifies for the Prakati Green Directory

Aulive sits squarely within the sustainable fashion space in Delhi, India. Its commitment to cruelty-free, plant-derived materials addresses one of fashion’s most pressing ethical issues — the widespread use of animal leather and synthetic PVC alternatives, both of which carry significant environmental costs. By choosing agricultural by-products over virgin raw materials, Aulive demonstrates that style and sustainability are not in conflict. The brand’s handcrafted production model further reduces its carbon footprint compared to industrial manufacturing, making it a genuinely responsible choice for Indian consumers seeking ethical fashion accessories.

Sustainability Impact and the Future of Plant-Based Fashion

Conventional leather production is one of the most resource-intensive processes in the fashion industry. Cattle farming for leather contributes significantly to methane emissions and deforestation, while the tanning process commonly uses hazardous chromium salts that pollute waterways and harm workers. Synthetic PVC leather, the most common alternative, is derived from petrochemicals and is not biodegradable, meaning it persists in landfill indefinitely. Plant-based alternatives like Pinãtex® and coconut leather side-step both of these problems — they use agricultural residues that would otherwise go to waste, require no toxic tanning processes, and decompose naturally at end of life.

By choosing these materials, Aulive enables Indian consumers to opt out of the conventional leather cycle without giving up the texture, durability, or aesthetic appeal they desire. The brand also demonstrates that sustainable fashion can be aspirational: their travel luggage, sling bags, and wallets are priced as premium products, signalling that plant-based materials can support a full-price, quality-first brand rather than being positioned as a budget compromise. As awareness of fashion’s environmental impact grows in India, Aulive’s pioneering work in plant-based leather provides both a benchmark and an inspiration for other designers to follow.
